Mythtv 0.22

To quote the mythtv web-site:

MythTV is a Free Open Source software digital video recorder (DVR) project distributed under the terms of the GNU GPL. It has been under heavy development since 2002, and now contains most features one would expect from a good DVR (and many new ones that you soon won't be able to live without).

We had the system for three years, and I've recently (January 2010) been working on upgrading our MythTV system to version 0.22. Linux Format magazine reviewed the system in their January edition and I have to say I agree with their conclusions. It is incredibly powerful, but still not at the stage where a more-than-basic system can be installed without detailed knowledge. For me, it's been an interesting project for learning about various aspects of Linux, and it's fun to be on the bleeding edge. You need lots of time, and a tolerant partner. The benefit we get is having a single AV system across the house, with access to the same content in different rooms.

The core components that allow you to watch and record TV now seem pretty stable, but I find the extras are still not sufficiently well-honed to be reliable.

I now have great playback quality to a 1080p flatpanel, with digital audio output, and access to BBC iPlayer in the lounge.
